As a Mom of two very busy little boys, I had loved the quick and easy use of the pop top style soup can versus the old fashioned can that required a can opener. That quickly changed this morning when I discovered how big of a danger they pose. Our dog had found something in the yard and when I went to figure out what he had discovered, I found one of our outdoor cats dead. Living in the country, it is not unusual to lose one of my outdoor fur babies. It was the manner in which Sneakers died that broke my heart. His head had become lodged in a soup can and I can only imagine how horrible and scared he was in his last moments. I had never considered the newer pop top style cans dangerous. Looking at the design, now I can see how easy it is for an animal to become stuck and suffocate from this style of can. Even with rinsing, all cans will still have a food smell that can be detected by an animal. Cans may sit for some time at recycling centers while waiting to be recycled and they definitely sit for a long time if sent to a landfill. Please completely remove the tops of all cans! It may take you a few extra moments, but it just may save a life. I really wish that I had known about this sooner. Sneakers would still be here with us.
